7 Ways to Efficiently Work from Home
Within this guide, we will run through our top tips and methods to enable you to efficiently and effectively work from home.
Due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, we feel it is an excellent time to help you structure your home working techniques.
Your home Settings & Environment
Working from home can throw many distractions. Therefore, in order to be productive, you need to minimise the potential distractions. At the same time, you want to be in a comfortable setting. But not too dissimilar from your usual work layout as this could throw your productivity off. It may be better to sit in a room separate from busy activities. A home office would be ideal. Or somewhere where you can leave once you have completed your work will help you mentally disconnect when you close the door.
If you have children who will be at home during the day, it will be best to implement a schedule when it is okay to come in for non-emergencies when you are working from home. A useful way could be to have a door hanger letting them know that they should not disturb you. Or you could plan a schedule around your children and make the schedule fit their needs and your work needs. For example, if you have a meeting set up at 2 pm depending on your child’s age, you could make their 2 pm a nap time, so you can attend your meeting.
You need to get fully ready as if you were going into the office rather than staying at home to work. Getting prepared properly will prevent temptations of getting back into bed or watching TV. Make a drink and get something to eat. This will make you feel awake and ready for the day ahead. Wearing clothes that you would wear to the office could allow you to explore the atmosphere of work. Because if you sit in your pyjamas, you may still feel the tiredness as you are wearing clothes you wear to bed.
Schedule & Calendars
When working from home, it can be easy to be distracted and go off task. So you must create and stick to a schedule to avoid such distractions.
If you have a schedule in the office, such as scheduling tweets and posts for the day ahead, stick to it and keep your routine. This will help you structure the rest of your day by completing a task early on, which is normal within your usual day-to-day office routine.
Using a calendar to set reminders for tasks is also essential. At BDP Agency, we use Microsoft Outlook as our calendar software. We highly recommend this programme to help you schedule your day.
As previously mentioned above, get prepared for the day ahead. Wake up at your usual time and get ready. Furthermore, do some meal prep, so you don’t spend your whole lunch or break times putting your meals together.
It could be useful to step outside for 10-15 minutes on your lunch or break time to distance yourself from your home working area. Doing this will help clear your head and be prepared to take on the remaining tasks in your day.
Communicating from home
When working remotely from home, you have far less contact with colleagues than you would in the office. Having less contact with your colleagues could lead to possible miscommunication. Therefore, it is essential to pick up the phone and speak to colleagues to run through problems and tasks rather than emailing constantly. It is good practice to discuss via the phone and to arrange a follow-up email afterwards. Within the follow-up email, you can include the details or a recap of the conversation. Doing this will also prevent you from becoming bored and missing the typical day to day interactions throughout the workday. BDP have also put together a helpful guide to help with successful email campaigns should you need any assistance.
To summarise, our key points would be;
Setting separate from busy areas.
System to minimise children’s interruptions.
Get prepared as if you were going into the office.
Following existing schedules.
Using a calendar to plan your day & stick to it.
Ensure proper communication with colleagues.
Take a walk to break up the day & clear your head.
